Face/Off / Volte/Face – Woo

Face/Off is a thriller movie directed by John Woo in 1997. Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), a dangerous terrorist, fell into a coma after a fight with Sean Archer, an FBI agent played by John Travolta . Thanks to a plastic surgery operation, Archer takes the face of Troy in order to make Troy’s brother confess where a bomb is located. But Troy comes out of the coma and, in turn, takes Archer’s physical appearance.

Volte/Face est un thriller américain réalisé par John Woo en 1997. Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), dangereux terroriste, est tombé dans le coma à la suite d’un affrontement avec Sean Archer (John Travolta), agent du FBI. Grâce à une intervention chirurgicale, Archer prend le visage de Troy pour faire avouer au frère de ce dernier l’emplacement d’une bombe. Mais Troy sort du coma et prend à son tour le visage d’Archer.

In order to infiltrate a network of imprisoned terrorists and to find out more about the bomb planted by Troy, Archer (still with Troy’s physical appearance) is incarcerated in a high security prison. The prisoners wear heavy boots remotely controlled by the prison guards. The guards follow the location of the detainees from a computer by using a kind of grid representation of the prison similar to the Battleships Game. During a fight, Archer is locked remotely by the guards. They set Archer’s magnetic boots on with their computers and  stopped him dead in its tracks.

This spatial machinery illustrates one of the prominent roles of the map (or any other geographical device)  in movies, namely the evocation of « magical thinking », i.e. thinking it is possible to influence a person to act through an object which is symbolically linked to him. This means that the map (here the computer and the geolocation software of the prison guards) plays the role of the doll in which pins are planted in Voodoo. Other posts on other films will fuel this proposal in the future.

Afin d’infiltrer un réseau de terroristes emprisonnés et d’en savoir plus sur la bombe posée par Troy, Archer est incarcéré (avec le visage de Troy) dans une prison de haute sécurité. Les prisonniers y portent de lourdes bottes contrôlées à distance par les matons. Ces derniers suivent la localisation des prisonniers à partir d’un ordinateur et d’une représentation maillée (de type bataille navale) de la prison. Lors d’une bagarre, Archer est immobilisé à distance par les gardiens : ces derniers depuis leur ordinateur enclenchent le magnétisme des bottes de Archer qui le stoppe net dans sa progression.

Le dispositif spatial utilisé illustre l’une des fonctions récurrentes de la carte (ou d’autres géo-dispositifs) au cinéma à  savoir l’évocation de la « pensée magique ». Celle-ci consiste à penser pouvoir agir sur un être à travers un objet qui lui est symboliquement lié. Autrement dit la carte (ici l’ordinateur et le logiciel de géolocalisation des matons) agit comme une figure dans laquelle on plante des épingles (poupée vaudou). D’autres billets sur d’autres films viendront alimenter cette proposition.
