Village of the damned is a 1960 movie directed by Wolf Rilla. It is an adaptation of John Wyndham’s science fiction novel, The Midwich Cuckoos. All inhabitants and animals of Midwich, UK, fall unconscious for several hours. Anyone entering in a perimeter around the village loses consciousness too. A few months later, all women and girls of childbearing age in the village become pregnant and give birth the same day to blond hair children with strange eyes. Several spatial machineries are involved in the movie.

Le village des damnés est un film réalisé en 1960 par Wolf Rilla, d’après la nouvelle de John Wyndham : The Midwich Cuckoos. Tous les habitants du village de Midwich en Angleterre ainsi que les animaux deviennent inconscients pendant plusieurs heures ainsi que toute personne qui pénètre dans un périmètre autour du village. Quelques mois plus tard, toutes les femmes et filles du village en âge de procréer se retrouvent enceintes et accouchent le même jour d’enfants blonds au regard étrange. Plusieurs dispositifs spatiaux interviennent dans le film.

We have separated these spatial machineries in two groups: while the phenomenon occurs and after the children were born.

While the phenomenon occurs:

At the beginning, in General Leighton’s office, we learn that military exercises take place in Midwich region. Major Bernard indicates their exact localization on a map (5th minute).

[Add on 3rd february 2013: Notes, as indicated by Mike in comments, this map is an 1947 Ordnance Survey map, more exactly the sheet number 103 (Doncaster region) from the  OS One-inch to the mile, England and Wales, New Popular Edition, 1945-1947). Thus if we refer to this map, Midwich (indicated by the pin) is in fact Doncaster.]

Zone delimitation / Délimitation de la zone

Then he goes on the spot and discovers that it is impossible to approach Midwich without loosing consciousness. There is a limit separating the village from the rest of the world, so that it is impossible for anybody to know what occurs there, even those which are in the village … Major Bernard calls for reinforcements and establishes a security zone. There are two ways for establishing the limit (8th minute) :

• a ribbon stretched on poles
• a white paint line across the road

Soon, the soldiers realize that airplane pilots also lose consciousness when they were approaching the village. A no-fly zone is decided. This area has a 5 miles radius and is centered on Midwich whose geographic coordinates are: 51° 10′ 30″ North, 1° 11′ 20″ West (13th minute). Note that these coordinates do not match any village. Moreover, it seems that there is no village named Midwich in the United Kingdom.

The awakening of a cow and of occupants of a damaged bus on the other side of the boundary give the green light in the investment of the village by the military forces. The limit drawn on the ground is crossed with precaution, what marks the disappearance of this zone.

After the children’s birth:

During a crisis meeting taking place in London, we learn that other similar events took place worldwilde, at the same moment, with for result birth of other « strange » children. It is illustrated by a planisphere whose  title is clearly visible:  » Philips’ New Commercial Map of the World on Mercator’s projection  » (map published in 1950 by George Philip and son) (42nd minute). The various places are successively localized on the map: one is in a township in Northern Australia, one in an Eskimo community in North Canada and two others in the « communist countries » : in Irkutsk and West of Ural (village of Ramensk).

In Midwich, « strange childrens » are grouped in the school of the village, where there are maps on walls. When Russian army destroys Ramensk, the children feel the disappearance of their fellows. The village location is shown on a map (showing the West of Russia). A zoom out shows it is a map of Europe ( » Stanford’s General Map of Europe « ) that they observe gravely (61st minute).

Note that there is also a map oft the World in the classroom (61st minute).

PS : In his remake in 1995 with the same title Carpenter moves the action to an American village but the movie is quite similar to Rilla’s. The major difference is the thematic of the double Carpenter adds to the movie. All children go by pair and one of them lost his alter ego – stillborn. In the original version, the Doctor’s character is divided between paternal love and passion for the Science. In the remake he is only a father. A new character, a woman from the NSA takes the Science side but her role is not very rich. And only one spatial machinery subsists : a short white line painted on the road. The other places where the « children » appeared are listed in a dialogue.

Ces dispositifs spatiaux peuvent être séparés en deux groupes : pendant le phénomène d’évanouissements et après le naissance des enfants.

Pendant les évènements :

Dans le bureau du général Leighton, on apprend que des manœuvres ont lieu dans la région de Midwich. Le Commandant Bernard indique sur une carte leur localisation exacte (5ième minute).

Ce dernier se rend alors sur place et découvre qu’il est impossible de s’approcher de Midwich sans perdre connaissance.L’espace est ici divisé par une limite séparant le village du reste du monde, de telle sorte qu’il est impossible à quiconque de savoir ce qui s’y passe, même à ceux qui s’y trouvent… Le Commandant Bernard appelle des renforts et une zone de sécurité est mise en place. Cette limite se matérialise alors de deux manières (8ème minute):

• un ruban est tendu sur des piquets
• une ligne de peinture blanche est tracée sur la route.

Rapidement, les militaires se rendent compte que même les pilotes d’avions sont victimes d’évanouissement à l’approche du village. Une interdiction d’approcher la zone leur est alors signifiée. Cette zone fait 5 miles de diamètre et a pour centre Midwich, dont les coordonnées géographiques semblent être : 51° 10′ 30″ Nord, 1° 11′ 20″ Ouest (13ème minute). Notons qu’en reportant ces coordonnée sur une carte, on s’aperçoit qu’elles ne correspondent à aucun village. Il ne semble d’ailleurs exister aucun Midwich au Royaume-Uni.

Le réveil d’une vache, puis des occupants d’un bus accidenté de l’autre côté de la limite donnent le feu vert à l’investissement du village par les militaires. La limite tracée au sol est alors traversée avec précaution, ce qui marque de fait la disparition de cette zone d’évanouissements.

Après l’arrivée des enfants :

Au cours d’une réunion de crise se déroulant à Londres, nous apprenons que d’autres évènements similaires ont eu lieu au même moment à travers le monde, qui se traduisent également par la naissance d’enfants « étranges ». Cela est illustré par un planisphère dont le titre est clairement visible : « Philips’ New Commercial Map of the World on Mercator’s projection » (carte éditée en 1950 par George Philip & son) (42ème minute). Les différents endroits sont localisés successivement sur la carte : un au nord de l’Australie, un dans le grand Nord Canadien et deux autres dans les « pays communistes », à Irkutsk et à l’ouest de l’Oural (village de Ramensk).

A Midwich, les enfants sont regroupés dans l’école du village où ils disposent de cartes dont au moins une de l’Europe et une du Monde. Lorsque Ramensk est détruit par l’armée russe, les enfants ressentent la disparition de leurs semblables. La localisation du village est montré sur une carte (montrant l’ouest de la Russie). Un zoom arrière montrant qu’il s’agit d’une carte de l’Europe (« Stanford’s General Map of Europe ») affichée dans l’école, que les enfants observent gravement (61ème minute).

Notons que la salle de classe est également équipée d’une carte du Monde (61ème minute).

PS. Le remake de Carpenter en 1995 avec le même titre déplace l’action dans un village américain et reste plutôt fidèle au film de Rilla. Il ajoute une notion de double. Les enfants vont dorénavant par deux et l’un a perdu son alter ego – mort-né, le personnage du docteur partagé entre amour paternel et passion scientifique n’est plus qu’un père, le scénariste l’a flanqué d’une scientifique au rôle d’ailleurs très peu étoffé. Carpenter efface tout dispositif spatial à part un morceau de trait sur la route et une liste simplement énoncée des autres endroits où sont apparus les « enfants ».
