China Girl (Ferrara)

Abel Ferrara’s China Girl, released in 1987, is the Romeo and Juliette story (in the movie : Tino and Ty), transposed to the eighties and to the Chinatown and Little Italy communities in Manhattan. Transformation of space (here the city of New York) is marked by the division, but the fusion as well of the both neighbourhoods. The movie shows the restructuration of a territory  in different ways .

China Girl, réalisé par Abel Ferrara en 1987, c’est Roméo et Juliette (Tino et Ty), à Manhattan, New York, dans les années 80, entre les communautés de Chinatown et de Little Italy. La mutation de l’espace (ici la ville de New York) à travers sa division, mais aussi sa fusion, où plutôt sa restructuration,  sont représentées de différentes manières.

Segregation

The two districts are separated by a boundary (Canal Street) (9th minute). A shot shows a sign of street. The protagonists are never without a hesitation when they trespass this  limit. The director shows this hesitation systematically.

Another scene illustrates this spatial segregation. A fight broke out between some « Chineses » and the hero (« Italian »). The Mounties intervened (symbol of American union)… But when the protagonists leave together, the policemen stop them and show the  « Chineses » the direction of Chinatown (symbol of American segregation) (106th minute).

Fusion or mutation ?

However, this limit is not as strict as it appears at first sight … Both districts are changing very fast and begin to merge in spite of some difficulties. Beginning credits present the installation of a Chinese restaurant (Canton garden), in Little Italy, instead of an Italian shop (D’Onofrio bakers).

This restaurant is not the first Chinese trade which settle in the « territory of the enemy » : an other plan of the movie shows two adjoining stores, a Chinese and an Italian… (36 th minute)

We could think both neighborhoods are merging. In fact, it is the beginning of the  conquest of Little Italy by Chinatown. We note that the Chinese mafia’s godfather points out the gain of Chinatown on Little Italy (25th minute) when he says that in 2 years it will be necessary to go to Brooklyn to get a pizza. Actually, Chinatown is really absorbing Little Italy.

Somewhere else

Finally, there is another districts where the lovers manage to escape their respective clans. Indeed, they make an appointment in a club ( The Metro) on the 13th street (Greenwich Village or the East Village) (31th et 37th minutes).

Symbolically, Ferrara shows the symbiotic relationship  of Tino and Ty, when their clans compete for space, and when Chinatowntakes takes over Little Italy, while the two neighborhoods could have merged too.

Les deux quartiers sont séparés par une limite (Canal street) (9ième minute). Un plan nous montre le panneau de la rue. Enfreindre cette limite ne se fait jamais sans une hésitation de la part des protagonistes. Ceci est à chaque fois montré par le réalisateur.

Une autre scène illustre bien cette ségrégation spatiale : une bagarre débute entre des « chinois » et le héros (« italien »). La Police montée intervient (Amérique intégratrice)… Mais lorsque les protagonistes s’en vont ensemble, la Police les stoppe et indique aux « Chinois » la direction de Chinatown (Amérique ségrégatrice) (106ième minute).

Fusion ou mutation ?

Cependant cette limite n’est pas si stricte que ça… En effet les deux quartiers sont en mutation et commencent à fusionner malgré les difficultés. Le générique de début présente l’installation d’un restaurant chinois (Canton garden), dans le quartier italien, en lieu et place d’une boutique italienne (D’Onofrio bakers).

D’autant que ce restaurant n’est pas le premier commerce chinois à s’installer en terre « ennemie ». Un plan nous montre deux magasins mitoyens : un chinois, un italien… (36ième minute)

En ne s’en tenant qu’à cela, nous pourrions penser que les deux quartiers sont en train de fusionner. Il s’agit en fait du début d’une conquête de Little Italy par Chinatown. Nous notons d’ailleurs que le parrain de la mafia chinoise émet une analyse sur le gain du quartier chinois par rapport à Little Italy (25ième minute), précisant que dans 2 ans, il faudra aller acheter des pizza à Brooklyn. De fait, il s’avère que Chinatown a réellement phagocyté Little Italy.

Ailleurs

Enfin, il existe un « ailleurs » permettant aux amoureux d’échapper à leurs clans respectifs. En effet, ils se donnent rendez-vous dans un club (The Metro) sur la 13ème rue (Greenwich Village ou Est Village) (31ième et 37ième minutes).

Symboliquement, Ferrara montre l’amour fusionnel des deux jeunes au moment même où leurs clans s’affrontent pour l’espace, et où Chinatown prend le pas sur Little Italy, là où les deux quartiers auraient eux même pu fusionner.
