Did You Hear About The Morgans? / Où sont passés les Morgan?

In the latest Marc Lawrence’s movie  Did You Hear About the Morgans?, with Hugh Grant and Jessica Parker, a killer searches  on Google Maps for the name of the city where his targets have hidden. He finds : Ray, Wyoming. The spectator follows the entire search  on the screen until the very detailed final map. The example is rather classic, but by digging a little, we make interesting discoveries.

Dans le dernier film de Marc Lawrence  Où sont passés les Morgan ?, avec Hugh Grant et Jessica Parker, un tueur recherche sur Google Maps le nom de la ville où sont réfugiées ses cibles, et trouve :  Ray, Wyoming . Il y a un plan très précis sur l’écran où on voit l’intégralité de la recherche et le zoom final sur la carte. L’exemple est plutôt classique en soi; mais en creusant un peu, on fait des découvertes intéressantes.

The Use of Google Maps in “Netherland”/L’usage de Google Maps dans “Netherland”

Google Maps appears in Joseph O’Neill’s novel Netherland. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first time that Google Maps appears in a literary work. If you have an earlier example, please write us a comment. Of course Google Maps doesn’t play a central role in the book. Google Maps appears in two short passages in the middle and at the very end of the book. In the first passage, Hans is suffering from the absence of her son, left with his mother in England, and uses Google Maps to visit the place where they are living. In the second, Hans travels this time in the other way, from London where he lives now to Brooklyn, in order to look at Chuck’s Cricket ground. O’Neill’s describes the navigation on Google Maps exactly like the story of a real trip.

Google Maps apparaît dans le roman Netherland de Josef O’Neill. A ma connaissance, c’est la première fois que Google Maps apparaît dans une œuvre littéraire (si vous avez un exemple antérieur, merci de le mettre en commentaire). Bien sûr, Google Maps n’est pas le sujet du livre. Il n’apparaît que dans deux brefs passages du roman, au milieu et à l’extrême fin du livre. Dans le premier extrait, Hans souffre de l’absence de son fils reparti avec sa mère en Angleterre et visite sur Google Maps l’endroit où ceux-ci habitent. Dans le second, il fait le voyage en sens inverse, de Londres où Hans se trouve alors, vers Brooklin et le terrain de cricket de Chuck. O’Neil décrit les déplacements sur Google comme s’il s’agissait de vrais voyages.
