The stairs in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art are very famous as the training ground of  Rocky Balboa, in the 1976 movie Rocky, directed by John G. Avildsen. The stairs appear successively in Rocky II (directed by Sylverster Stallone in 1979), Rocky III (Sylverster Stallone, 1985), Rocky V (John G. Avildsen, 1990) and Rocky Balboa (Sylverster Stallone, 2006). The stairs could be considered as a materialization of the fiction as some people call it now Rocky Steps but we will focus on the bronze statue of Rocky, work of the American artist A. Thomas Schomberg, that Stallone offered to the city in 1982.

Devant le Philadelphia Museum of Art se dresse un escalier rendu célèbre comme terrain d’entraînement, de Rocky Balboa, dans le film Rocky de John G. Avildsen, sorti en 1976. Cet escalier apparait successivement dans Rocky II (Sylverster Stallone, 1976), Rocky III (Sylverster Stallone, 1985) , Rocky V (John G. Avildsen, 1990) et Rocky Balboa (Sylverster Stallone, 2006). L’escalier pourrait être considéré comme une matérialisation de la fiction puisque certains l’appellent maintenant le Rocky Steps. Mais nous nous intéresserons plutôt à la statue de bronze, œuvre de l’artiste américain A. Thomas Schomberg, offerte à la ville  en 1982 par Stallone lui-même.

The Potemkin Stairs are a giant stairway in Odessa, Ukraine. This stairway marks the formal entrance into the city from the direction of the sea and is the most famous symbol of Odessa. It was constructed between 1837 and 1841. Originally known as Richelieu Steps, because of the monument located at the top of the stairs that depicts  the Duc de Richelieu, Odessa’s first governor, it was renamed Potemkin Stairs in 1955 to honor the 30th anniversary of the Battleship Potemkin, the famous Eisentein’s film. That can be considered as a subtle form of materialization of fiction (see also this set on Flickr). After Ukrainian independence in 1992, the Potemkin Stairs were given back their original name but most inhabitants still refer to the stairs by their Soviet name.

L’escalier Potemkine est un escalier monumental d’Odessa, en Ukraine. Il est considéré comme l’entrée officielle de la ville venant de la mer, et représente son symbole le plus connu. Il a été construit entre 1837 et 1841. Il fut d’abord appelé Escalier Richelieu du fait de la statue du Duc de Richelieu, premier maire de la ville d’Odessa, élevée en haut des marches. L’escalier fut renommé Escalier Potemkine en 1955 pour commémorer le 30^ème anniversaire du très célèbre film d’Eisenstein, ce qui est une forme subtile de matérialisation de la fiction (voir aussi cette galerie sur Flickr). Après l’indépendance de l’Ukraine en 1992, le nom original fut repris, mais les habitants continuent semble-t-il à l’appeler par son nom soviétique.
