Short Cuts in Los Angeles

Short Cuts, another movie of  Robert Altman (see this post about The Gingerbread Man), is adapted from short stories of Raymond Carver transposed to Los Angeles.  When the stories of Carver about several couples were independent, Altman connects them by inventing family or neighborhood links or by making a character the cause of events that happen in another story. If the characters intersect incessantly throughout the film, it is always incidental and occasional, even if the consequences can be significant. We follow them in their wanderings through the city or the Los Angeles region, but their stories never converge. They share relationships but they do not seem to have really anything in common. Only the film narrative brings them together and also the use of music that spreads very often from a shot of a story to another. The closing credits displaying Los Angeles maps indicate what all those characters actually share …

Dans Short Cuts, un autre de ses films (voir ce billet sur The Gingerbread Man), Robert Altman transpose le recueil de nouvelles de Raymond Carver à Los Angeles. Chez Carver, les récits qui racontent les histoires de plusieurs couples étaient indépendants. Altman les connecte entre eux en inventant des liens familiaux ou de voisinage, en faisant d’un personnage d’une histoire la cause de ce qui arrive dans une autre histoire. Si les personnages se croisent de manière incessante au cours du film, c’est toujours de manière incidente et ponctuelle, même si les conséquences peuvent être importantes. Nous les suivons dans leurs déambulations en ville ou dans la région, mais leurs histoires ne convergent jamais. S’ils ont des relations entre eux, ils ne semblent rien avoir en commun. Seule la trame narrative du film les rassemble, ainsi que l’utilisation de la musique qui déborde très souvent d’un plan et d’une histoire à l’autre. Les plans de Los Angeles du générique final nous donnent une indication sur ce qu’ils partagent réellement.

The Gingerbread Man (1998) is a thriller directed by Robert Altman. The lawyer Rick Magruder (Kenneth Branagh) helps young and pretty Mallory Doss, harassed by his father. He launches a procedure to confine him to a mental institution. Several maps are shown in the movie.
