Star Wars Back on Earth / Retour sur terre de la Guerre des étoiles

The dark lens series of the photographer Cédric Delseau (a book at Editions Xavier Barral) is an artistic kind of materialization of fiction. The photographer takes pictures in contemporary urban sites of different countries (France, Dubai …) and add them characters and spaceships from the movie Star Warsby George Lukas. This is not just a collage of digital images. Delseau shoots action figures, models or toys by respecting size, perspective and light and combine this new pictures with the photos of the locations. In the last series in Dubai, he also uses costumed actors. By populating photographs of real places with real figures issued from fiction he breaches with the convention : can places that welcome so easily the futuristic creatures of Star Wars can be real ? These welle known creatures that seem so comfortable in these places are they really imaginary? A beautiful thought on the way reality is built through fiction.

La série The dark lens du photographe Cédric Delseau (livre aux Editions Xavier Barral) est un cas très spécifique de matérialisation de la fiction, de type artistique. Le photographe prend des photographies de lieux urbains contemporains dans différents pays (France, Dubaï …) et y intègre ensuite des personnages ou véhicules tirés du film Star Wars de George Lukas. Il ne s’agit pas d’un simple collage d’images. Delseau utilise de “vrais” figurines, modèles réduits ou jouets qu’il photographie en respectant la taille, la perspective et la lumière avant de les détourer et les placer numériquement dans les photographies des lieux. Dans la dernière série sur Dubaï, il utilise aussi des figurants costumés. En peuplant des photographies de lieux réels avec des figures réelles mais issues de la fiction il ouvre une brèche : des lieux si naturellement habitables par les créatures futuristes de Star Wars peuvent-ils exister ? Ces créatures que nous connaissons tous et qui semblent si à l’aise dans ces lieux réels sont-elles vraiment imaginaires ? Une belle réflexion sur la construction du réel par la fiction.

Real Properties: Fake Estates – Matta-Clark

Gordon Matta-Clark was a conceptual artist from the downtown New-York art scene during the 1970s whose work focused on the physical changes affecting New-York during the post-war decades. His work Real Properties : Fake Estates (RPFE) (1973-1974) documents some of these changes and their consequences on the urban fabric of the city. The course of this work within the art market gives us a rich series of examples of spatial machineries used in what we could call “the art of land” (drawing on the work of the French geographer Anne Volvey) e.g. all the artistic tactics which attempt to use and subvert both the ways space is legally appropriated and all the surveying, delineating and occupying methods that are associated with this process of appropriation.

Artiste conceptuel de la scène new-yorkaise des années 1970, Gordon Matta-Clark s’est intéressé aux transformations physiques de New -York pendant les décennies d’après-guerre. Son œuvre Reality Properties : Fake Estates (RPFE) (1973-1974) en documente certaines conséquences. Le parcours de cette œuvre sur la scène et le marché de l’art contemporain met en scène un riche échantillon des différents dispositifs spatiaux utilisés dans un courant qu’on pourrait nommer “l’art foncier” (ou « l’art du land » pour reprendre le terme utilisé par la géographe Anne Volvey) et qui désigne les pratiques artistiques qui visent à utiliser et détourner les modes légaux d’appropriation de l’espace et toutes les méthodes d’arpentage, de délimitation, d’occupation qui y sont associées.
