China Girl (Ferrara)

Abel Ferrara’s China Girl, released in 1987, is the Romeo and Juliette story (in the movie : Tino and Ty), transposed to the eighties and to the Chinatown and Little Italy communities in Manhattan. Transformation of space (here the city of New York) is marked by the division, but the fusion as well of the both neighbourhoods. The movie shows the restructuration of a territory  in different ways .

China Girl, réalisé par Abel Ferrara en 1987, c’est Roméo et Juliette (Tino et Ty), à Manhattan, New York, dans les années 80, entre les communautés de Chinatown et de Little Italy. La métamophoses des cloportes is a 1965 French crime movie directed by Pierre Granier-Deferre adapted from an Alphonse Boudard’s novel. Three gangsters, Edmond (Charles Aznavour), Arthur (Maurice Biraud) and Rouquemoute (Georges Géret)) plan to seize the content of a safe and ask for Alphonse’s help (Lino Ventura). Alphonse takes control of the operation … and  uses a plan for preparing the burglary.

La métamophoses des cloportes est un film réalisé par Pierre Granier-Deferre en 1965 d’après le roman d’Alphonse Boudard. Wolf Vostell is an eminent German artist, died in 1998 and considered as a pioneer of the Fluxus movement who questioned categories of the art and  rejected institutions and the idea of art work itself. One of his works, realized in 1980, integrates a map of Berlin area.

Wolf Vostell est un éminent artiste allemand, mort en 1998 et considéré comme un pionnier du mouvement Fluxus qui remettait en cause les catégories de l’art, rejetant les institutions et la notion même d’œuvre d’art. Un de ses montages, réalisé en 1980, intègre une carte de la région berlinoise.

La Bandera is a 1935 French drama film directed by Julien Duvivier and based a novel by Pierre Mac Orlan. On the run after having committed a murder, Pierre Gilieth (Jean Gabin) enlists in the Spanish Foreign Legion, with a police informant, Fernando Lucas (Robert Le Vigan). A great scene shows us an original spatial machinery.

La Bandera est un film de Julien Duvivier réalisé en 1935, d’après un roman de Pierre Mac Orlan. En fuite après avoir tué un homme, Pierre Gilieth (Jean Gabin) s’enrôle dans la Légion espagnole, en même temps qu’un informateur de la police, Fernando Lucas (Robert Le Vigan). Une belle scène montre un original dispositif spatial.

Star Wars : No materialization for the Death Star / Pas de matérialisation pour l’Étoile Noire

The U.S. administration has given its answer: there will be no replica of the famous Star Wars space station, in spite of the petition which had gathered nearly 35,000 signatures. The Death Star will not join Yoda in our collection of  materializations of Star Wars fiction … Too bad ! (?)

L’administration américaine a donné sa réponse  : elle ne construira pas de réplique de la célèbre station spatiale du la série Star Wars, et ce malgré la pétition qui a rassemblé près de 35 000 signatures. L’Étoile Noire ne rejoindra donc pas Yoda dans notre collection de matérialisations de la fiction…. Dommage ! (?)

Snake Eyes is a 1998 movie directed by Brian De Palma. Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage), a corrupt police detective, came to attend a boxing match in Atlantic Ciy ‘s Arena. He meets his friend Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise) who escorts the United States Defense Secretary. The Secretary is the victim of an assassination attempt and Santoro investigates the crime. Two spatial machineries are used in the movie.

Snake Eyes est un film de Brian De Palma sorti en salles en 1998. Rick Santoro (Nicolas Cage), policier corrompu, est venu assister un à combat de boxes à l’Atlantic City Arena. Il y retrouve son ami Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise), chargé s’assurer  la sécurité du secrétaire d’État, qui est lui aussi dans le public. Lorsque ce dernier est victime d’une tentative d’assassinat, Santoro mène son enquête. Deux dispositifs spatiaux sont utilisés dans le film.

Tropic Thunder / Tonnerre sous les tropiques

Tropic Thunder is a 2008 action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller. While the shooting of a movie about Vietnam War is going badly, the director decides to immerse 5 actors in the jungle. He hopes to film them using candid cameras. Unfortunately, not everything goes as expected:  they quickly find themselves isolated in the jungle in uniforms and with artificial weapons… They decide to continue the "shooting" using a map and a list of scenes.

Tonnerre sous les tropiques est un film de et avec Ben Stiller sorti en salles en 2008. Alors que le tournage d’un film sur la guerre du Viet-Nam se présente mal, le réalisateur décide d’immerger ses 5 acteurs dans la jungle, tout en les filmant à l’aide de caméras cachées. Malheureusement, tout ne se passe pas comme prévu, et abandonnés en plein cœur de la jungle avec leurs équipements (uniformes, bardas, armes factices), ils se retrouvent rapidement livrés à eux mêmes… Ils décident donc de continuer ce qu’ils croient être le tournage, s’aidant d’une carte et de la liste de scènes.

On (e)space and fiction we already have written about tattoos (Prison Break, Waterworld). But we present here a non fictional example.  The Long March  was a military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China to escape Tchang Kaï-chek’s Kuomintang army, during the Chinese Civil war. From 2002 to 2005, 250 Chinese  and internal artists conducted a project to repeat this Long March. Qin Ga, a young Chinese artist, pushed the project much further.

Si (e)space & fiction a déjà abordé la question des tatouages (Prison Break, Waterworld), c’en est un usage moins fictionnel qui est présenté ici. De 2002 à 2005, 250 artistes chinois (et internationaux) se sont lancés dans un projet artistique consistant à refaire La longue Marche, nom donné au long  périple, mené par l’Armée rouge chinoise et une partie de l’appareil du Parti communiste chinois pour échapper à l’Armée nationale révolutionnaire du Kuomintang de Tchang Kaï-chek durant la Guerre civile chinoise. Qin Ga, jeune artiste chinois, a poussé le projet plus loin encore.

In 2011, a mortal virus eliminated 99 % of population on the Earth. Goodchild, a scientist, managed to create a vaccine and 400 years later,  the survivors inhabit Bregna, a city managed by the Goodchild dynasty. But any dictatorship engenders a rebellion: the ‘Monicans ‘, led by The Handler, of whom Æon Flux ( Charlize Theron) is a member. When she receives for mission to murder Trevor Goodchild, The Handler equips her with an original spatial machinery…

La baston est un film réalisé en 1985 par Jean-Claude Missiaen. René Levasseur, ex perceur de coffre, accepte de réaliser un dernier cambriolage afin de récolter les fonds qui lui permettront d’aller aux États-Unis pour faire opérer son jeune fils, atteint d’un pathologie cardiaque. Malheureusement, tout ne se passe pas comme prévu. On découvre au cours du film un dispositif spatial très original.

What to Do in Case of Fire? (Was tun, wenn’s brennt? in German) is a 2001 German film directed by Gregor Schnitzler. In 1987, in Kreuzberg, Berlin, 6 young squatters fight for their anarchistic ideals, making propaganda films under the name of "Group 36". In one of these movies, they show how to make a bomb  that they put in a vacant house in Grunewald, another district of Berlin. The movie begins 13 years later…  with the explosion of the bomb ! Years have passed and many things have changed…

Was tun, wenn’s brennt? (Retour de flammes pour son titre français) est un film allemand réalisé par Gregor Schnitzler sorti en salles en 2001. En 1987, à Kreuzberg, quartier de Berlin, six jeunes squatteurs défendent farouchement leurs idéaux anarchistes, tournant des films de propagande sous le nom de "Groupe 36". Une affaire d’état is a 2009 french political thriller directed by Eric Valette. This movie is an adaptation of Dominque Manotti’s novel, Nos fantastiques années fric. It is about an affair of state, arms trafficking between France and Africa, covert financing, governmental security agencies, prostitution… and criminal investigation.We take a special interest in two characters. One of them has a non-conventional use of a road map.

Une affaire d’état est un thriller politique français réalisé par Eric Valette et sorti en salles en 2009, d’après le roman Nos Fantastiques années fric de Dominique Manotti. Il relate l’histoire d’un traffic d’armes avec l’Afrique mêlant financements occultes, jeux de pouvoir entre officines gourvenementales, négociations pour la libération d’otages, élections présidentielles, prostitution… et enquête policière. Deux personnages nous intéressent plus particulièrement. L’un d’eux fait d’ailleurs un usage bien peu conventionnel d’une carte routière.

Quaid’s location / La localisation de Quaid

Total Recall is a 1990 science-fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven. It is an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick’s novel, Remember it for You Wholesale. The movie  tells the discovery by Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) he is not the man he believed he was. A spatial machinery takes a major role in the story :  a device implanted in Quaid’s head, which allows his enemies to be locate him.

Total Recall est un film de science-fiction réalisé par Paul Verhoeven en 1990. Le scénario est adapté de la nouvelle Souvenirs à vendre de Philip K. Dick. Il conte l’histoire de Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) qui va s’apercevoir assez vite qu’il n’est pas celui qu’il croit être. Un dispositif spatial tient un rôle important dans l’histoire : il s’agit d’un dispositif, implanté dans le crâne de Quaid, qui permet sa localisation par ses ennemis.

The Sunchaser is a 1996 movie directed by Michael Cimino. Brandon "Blue" Monroe (John Seda) is a 16 years old half-blood Navajo. He is in jail,  suffering from an incurable cancer. During an examination at the UCLA Medical Plaza, Los Angeles, he takes the oncologist Reynolds (Woody Harrelson) hostage. He begins a desperate trip to a sacred mountain in search of a lake the water of which is supposed to have healing virtues. He hopes also to meet again the Navajo medecine man who spoke to him about the lake when he was a child. Blue has a book with  an engraving of the mountain and a map.

Blue a en sa possession un livre dans lequel on trouve une gravure représentant la montagne sacrée, et aussi une carte.

Reality Bites is a 1994 romantic comedy film directed by Ben Stiller that  tells the story of four young adults newly graduated who are looking for  a place in the society. Among them,  Troy (Ethan Hawke)  loves Lelaina (Winona Ryder) in secret. Two maps appear in the movie.

Génération 90 est une comédie romantique réalisée en 1994 par Ben Stiller. Elle raconte la vie de quatre jeunes adultes fraichement diplômés qui cherchent leur place dans la société. Parmi eux, Lelaina (Winona Ryder) et Troy (Ethan Hawke) qui éprouve un amour refoulé pour elle. Deux cartes apparaissent dans le film.

Yoda est LE grand maître Jedi du space-opera Star Wars imaginé et réalisé par Georges Lucas. Il apparaît dans cinq épisodes sur les six que compte la saga (I, II, III, V et VI). Il se matérialise principalement à deux endroits de la surface terrestre.
